AUGUST CHEMICAL OF THE MONTH – Potassium Permanganate

Potassium Permanganate is an odorless and dark purple solid. It is used in solutions as a disinfectant, deodorizer, and in water purification. In its pure form it is classified an Oxidizer Class 2 and Corrosive. Since there are multiple hazard classifications, the most stringent will apply when determining the maximum allowable quantity (MAQ).

Most model codes limit the indoor storage of Oxidizer Class 2 to 250 pounds. The storage amount can be increased or decreased based on storage configuration, floor level, and presence of fire sprinklers. Remember to always thoroughly review your SDS and check your local codes before implementing any hazmat code requirements. TheHazMatApp is available for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
